Illustrative Documentation of
21st Century Fires

Introduction:

Fire disasters have been among the most devastating events faced by humanity. They not only destroy property but also claim lives and leave deep scars on communities. Yet, amidst the destruction, moments of solidarity and hope often emerge. This project aimed to explore the dual nature of fire – its destructive power and the resilience it evokes – through the metaphor of light and shadow. Black-and-white illustrations, inspired by analog photography, were used to emphasise the drama and emotional depth of these events.

Objective:

The goal of this work was to create a book that documented major fire disasters of the 21st century while also highlighting the human connection and acts of help that arose from them. Personal stories, interviews, and newspaper excerpts were combined with expressive illustrations to capture both tragedy and hope.

The black-and-white illustrations resemble analog photographs and convey the feeling of capturing a historical moment. These visuals make it possible to portray the drama of the events in ways that go beyond the limits of photography. Through deliberate use of light and shadow, emotional and metaphorical layers are enhanced.

The illustrations use strong contrasts between light and dark to emphasize the intensity and emotional weight of the fire disasters. Dark areas symbolize loss and destruction, while brighter sections represent hope and human solidarity.
